Gratitude as a Practice Owner
Gratitude Changed The Way I Lead My Clinic
When you're running a pediatric therapy practice, it's easy to spend your day putting out fires.
You're solving scheduling issues.
Supporting therapists.
Managing difficult conversations.
Reviewing documentation.
Trying to keep the clinic running while also thinking about what's next.
It's easy to get caught on the hamster wheel.
I know because I've been there.
Recently, I took a step back to reflect on the people and experiences that have shaped my journey over the past 25 years. That simple pause reminded me that NONE OF US BUILD A SUCCESSFUL PRACTICE ALONE.
Behind Every Practive Owner Is A Strong Support System
I honestly wouldn't have a practice without my husband.
He's my biggest supporter, my biggest encourager, and the person who keeps so many things running behind the scenes.
As clinic owners, we often get recognized for what people can see.
What they don't see are the family members, mentors, business partners, and friends who quietly help us carry the weight.
BUILDING A CLINIC ISN'T A SOLO JOURNEY.
It's a team effort, both inside and outside the walls of your practice.
Investing In Yourself Changes Everything
A few years ago, I made the decision to go back to school and earn my post-professional doctorate.
It wasn't easy.
I hadn't been in school for more than two decades.
Research had changed.
Technology had changed.
The way we learned had changed.
But going back to school reignited something I didn't even realize I had lost.
It challenged me to think differently.
It pushed me to dig into the research.
And ultimately, it led me to develop my Parent Engagement Program.
Looking back, earning my doctorate wasn't just another credential.
IT CHANGED THE DIRECTION OF MY CAREER.
Sometimes the best investment you can make isn't in your clinic.
IT'S IN YOURSELF.
Coaching Helped Me Grow Faster
One thing I've learned as a business owner is this.
YOU DON'T HAVE TO FIGURE EVERYTHING OUT ON YOUR OWN.
Throughout my journey, I've been fortunate to learn from coaches, mentors, and other practice owners who challenged my thinking, encouraged me when things felt difficult, and helped me see opportunities I couldn't see on my own.
Every coach brought something different.
Some helped me build programs.
Some helped me think differently about leadership.
Others helped me improve systems inside my practice.
None of those lessons came from a textbook.
They came from people who had already walked the road ahead of me.
That's one of the reasons I encourage clinic owners to find community.
THE RIGHT CONVERSATION CAN SAVE YOU YEARS OF TRIAL AND ERROR.
The Greatest Reward Isn’t Growing The Clinic
People often assume the biggest reward of owning a clinic is growth.
For me, it isn't.
THE GREATEST REWARD IS SEEING THE LONG-TERM IMPACT.
I love running into families years later.
A child I treated as a preschooler is now driving.
Graduating.
Starting college.
Living independently.
Those moments remind me why this work matters.
On difficult days, it's easy to focus on the problems.
The parent who's frustrated.
The schedule that fell apart.
The therapist who's struggling.
But those moments don't tell the whole story.
EVERY CHILD WE HELP CREATES A RIPPLE EFFECT THAT EXTENDS FAR BEYOND THE CLINIC WALLS.
Mentorship Has Become My Favorite Part Of Leadership
Early in my career, asking questions felt intimidating.
There was competition.
There wasn't always a safe place to learn.
If I didn't know something, I often went home and tried to figure it out by myself.
I never wanted my team to feel that way.
That's why mentorship has become one of the foundations of our clinic culture.
I love sitting down with therapists to talk through cases.
I enjoy stepping into treatment sessions to offer another perspective.
I love watching a therapist grow from feeling unsure to confidently leading a parent conversation.
WATCHING THAT TRANSFORMATION IS ONE OF THE MOST REWARDING PARTS OF WHAT I DO.
Because when therapists grow, children and families benefit too.
Community Makes Clinic Ownership Better
One of the greatest gifts of private practice has been the relationships I've built with other clinic owners across the country.
Clinic ownership can feel lonely.
There are challenges that only another owner truly understands.
Having people you can call, ask questions, and learn from makes all the difference.
We all face similar struggles.
Staffing.
Reimbursement.
Growth.
Leadership.
None of us have every answer.
BUT TOGETHER, WE BECOME BETTER LEADERS.
Take Time To Celebrate The Journey
As clinic owners, we're always looking ahead.
The next hire.
The next project.
The next challenge.
But sometimes it's worth pausing long enough to appreciate how far you've come.
Celebrate the people who've supported you.
Celebrate the therapists you've mentored.
Celebrate the children whose lives have been changed.
Celebrate the lessons that made you a better leader.
Gratitude doesn't make the challenges disappear.
BUT IT DOES REMIND US WHY THE JOURNEY IS WORTH IT.
